Belfry Middle School is located in the facility that previously housed Belfry High School. After much renovation, Belfry Middle School first opened its doors in August 2005. The campus includes the main building, consisting of three floors, twenty-seven classrooms, a media center, computer lab, restrooms, office complex, and cafeteria. Other structures include a refurbished band room and full-size gymnasium. In addition, the school boasts a well-maintained football field and practice field.
Belfry Middle School's vision of becoming Kentucky's Best has become a reality and the school has recently been recognized in Washington D.C. as a School to Watch. The instructional day is comprised of six periods. Each grade has its own lunch period, and a short break is taken during sixth period. The academic program centers on a strong core of classes-language arts, science, social studies, and math. Students also receive instruction in practical living and physical education on a rotating basis. Additionally, students at all grade levels are enrolled in one elective class each year. Elective courses include band, high school prep, career choices (gifted/talented) and study skills.
Students at Belfry Middle School are given abundant opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities. A comprehensive sports program includes football, boys and girls basketball, girls volleyball, track, and cheerleading. From 2006 to 2008 our football and girls basketball teams won the Pike County Championship in consecutive fashion. In 2009 boys basketball and football were county champions as well. In addition to sports, the school has an active Student Technology Leadership Program and academic team that competes on local and state levels. Numerous students have won awards in both programs, and the academic team won first place in the district Governor's Cup competition in consecutive years past. The school also has a chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Student performance results from the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System (CATS) indicate that Belfry Middle School is number seven amongst Kentucky middle schools for the 2007-2008 school year with a 97 academic index. The school also scored 10 out of 10 on Federal No Child Left Behind testing. After a careful analysis of student assessment data, a comprehensive school improvement plan was developed to help the school address identified weaknesses and maintain strengths. Regular reports are given to the school council concerning the implementation status of the plan.
Belfry Middle School is committed to working with students, staff, parents, and community members to establish a tradition of success. The Parent, Teacher, Student Organization (PTSO) publicizes meetings and encourages participation from all interested parties. In the midst of the daily demands and challenges of providing a quality education for all students, teachers volunteer to provide tutoring each evening to 5:00 pm to assist students in homework, makeup work, or extra credit activities. Belfry Middle School continues daily to reach toward its vision of becoming Kentucky's Best.
